The Philippine College of Physicians raised alarm over the rise in pertussis or whooping cough cases nationwide, as the Department of Health said it would prioritize the protection of the vulnerable population against the disease.
“This would prevent the spread of pertussis and protect vulnerable populations from its potentially severe complications,” the doctors’ group said in a statement. “In a situation with limited resources, the DOH is choosing to protect the most vulnerable first and is open to exploring ways to make access to the vaccines easier for the other population groups,” the department’s statement read.
In a Senate hearing yesterday, Health Secretary Dr. Teddy Herbosa said whooping cough is more of a problem for kids below 5 years old.
