PBBM’s order, which mandates a timely review of the minimum wage rates in their respective regions within 60 days prior to the anniversary of their latest wage order, was meant to address the impact of inflation that affects the purchasing power of the consumers.
That call to Congress provides an interesting facet to how businesses can absorb the higher wages that they will implement. It is a fact that hiking the minimum wages will affect the health of many businesses in the country. That may be true, but it is not absolute. Thus, that wage order of President Marcos possibly stems from that financial scenario that allows workers to live on decent wages, provide pension funds such as the Social Security System longer actuarial life, reinvigorate the economy, and allow the country to move up to the upper-middle income status.
One bright note on PBBM’s pro-investment stance, according to Salceda, is the tweaking of the Private-Public Partnership Code, which allows local government units to partner with the private sector for projects that will transform their localities into economic powerhouses.
