Senator Aquilino Pimentel III said Tuesday President Duterte’s push for the death penalty for a high-profile illegal drugs crime has a good chance of being passed by the Senate.

But to include the coverage to more than one heinous crime such as plunder “will be an uphill battle,’’ Pimentel said.

Thus President Duterte’s combination of illegal drugs and plunder for coverage of his death penalty bill as announced in his State of the Nation Address last Monday has to squeak past an expected heated debate on the Senate floor, said Pimentel, former Senate President and current president of the Duterte’s Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino -Laban party.

Boxing Icon Senator Emmanuel ‘’Manny’’ D. Pacquiao, a political ally of President Duterte, also had filed a bill calling for the death penalty for drug lords. He said about 20 of the 52 states comprising the United States have death penalty in their statutes. Senator Francis N. Pangilinan, president of the opposition Liberal Party, said that “even if the Senate minority is now down to four members, we will continue to serve as fiscalizers and maintain balance in the chamber.’’
