The number of active COVID-19 cases in Pasig City has increased to 133, the local government reported on Sunday, Jan. 2.

The latest tally represents about 682 percent higher than the 17 active cases or the lowest number recorded last Dec. 14.The city government urged the public to remain alert and observe the minimum public health standards at all times.

According to the Department of Health , the Philippines is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases as it has recorded 4,600 new cases on Jan. 2, the highest since Oct. 24. On Dec. 31, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases raised the alert level in the National Capital Region from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 3 on Jan. 3 to 15.

The country has recorded 14 Omicron variant cases, 11 of which are imported cases while three are local transmission. The Omicron variant was first detected in United Kingdom and has been considered as highly transmissible.
