The government has been eyeing to collaborate with media outlets for distance learning through radio, television, and online platforms for school year 2020-2021, as physical classes are discouraged because of the continuing COVID-19 risk.Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said all private media companies, including ABS-CBN, can be tapped to help in the education efforts of the government as the coronavirus crisis persists.
"Lahat po ng private companies na media ay pupwede i-tap po," he said in a virtual press briefing.(We can tap all private media companies.)"If ABS-CBN can come back on the air, I'm sure, as a way of showing their commitment to the Filipino people, that they will allow their broadcast to be used for educational purposes," he said.
ABS-CBN had said that it formed a team that would create educational and child development programs during the COVID-19 crisis. The Philippines' largest media network has created a team "that would focus solely on how to use our media assets for education and child development," ABS-CBN President and CEO Carlo Katigbak told the Senate Committee on Public Services earlier this month.
"Absolutely, we are willing to help the government in creating an educational program under the new normal," he said, after Sen. Francis Tolentino asked if the network is willing to participate in the government's push to air some lessons on radio and television while students are still barred from physically coming to schools.
ABS-CBN went off-air on May 5 after the National Telecommunications Commission ordered it to "cease and desist" from broadcasting. The company's franchise expired on May 4.The House of Representatives on Monday started hearings on long pending bills seeking to give ABS-CBN a fresh 25-year broadcast franchise.
