Ormoc City revives Filipinos’ kite flying tradition as means to create awareness of pandemic

TACLOBAN CITY — To highlight the unity of Ormoc City with other municipalities in Leyte’s 4th District amidst the pandemic, the city staged its 2nd Tabanog Festival on Sunday .Aside from reliving an old Filipino tradition of kite flying during summer, the event organized by the city government also serves as a symbol of strength and resilience.

Hanzel Estrera Castaneda, one of the event organizers, said the event aims to intensify awareness of the Covid19. “We want to promote cultural significance through localized kite designs, and to create a healthy way of coping with stress through pure fun and enjoyment for family and friends where they can relax while enjoying the competition,” she shared.The participants were encouraged to develop their respective kite concepts and designs reflecting not only their team’s creativity and artistry but also their progress and strength through the test of time.

The winners were rewarded with cash prizes ranging from P5,000 to P35,000 in the adult and open categories that were open to all residents of the district.
