I can’t remember the number of times I’ve been asked this question. And each time, I uncomfortably answer, I don’t know, and try to explain that I do not think that there is a particular scent for one’s sexual orientation. While this question is asked without malice, I personally believe that it is a form of microaggression.
We don’t correct this concept just because it is inaccurate, but also because it is discriminatory and harms lives. Usually, people ask this question because they have no idea about the sexual orientation of that particular individual. However, we have to realize that one’s sexual orientation is not anyone’s business. The decision to let people know about his or her sexual orientation solely belongs to that individual. No one owes you this disclosure.
