FILIPINO pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena seized a gold medal and bested his own Philippine outdoor record in the Jump and Fly competition in Mossingen, Germany on Saturday .
Obiena cleared 5.85 meters to rule the championship and eclipse the previous national record of 5.81 meters he set in Chiara, Italy in 2019 when he became the first Filipino to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Zernikel Oleg of Germany placed second with a 5.7-meter performance while his compatriots Kass Philip and Human Tom Linus cleared 5.4 meters to jointly claim third place.
This is Obiena's third podium finish in nine days as he displayed his readiness for the Tokyo Games. He won a gold medal in Sweden on June 3 and a silver one in the Netherlands on June 7.Get the latest news from your inbox for free
