According to a report from the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the fire started in Sambag village around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
It took a combined force of Bureau of Fire Protection and various volunteer fire brigade personnel to put out the fire more than an hour later. The BFP is still investigating the cause of the fire. According to the Iloilo City Social Welfare and Development Office, 128 people or 25 families were affected by the New Year fire and are staying at the village gym.
This is not the first fire incident in Western Visayas during the New Year. There was also a fire that gutted three houses at world-famous Boracay Island on New Year’s Eve.
