THE Department of Health on Friday, January 8, 2021, confirmed 1,776 new coronavirus infections, the highest in two weeks.There were eight additional mortalities, raising the death toll from coronavirus disease 2019 to 9,364. The case fatality rate remained at 1.94 percent.The 1,776 new cases were lower than the 1,885 reported on Christmas Day, December 25, 2020, and higher than the 1,765 cases on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2021.
Within the recent 14 days from December 26, 2020 to January 8, 2021, the number of new cases confirmed in a day fell below 1,000 for six days due to the low number of individuals who had themselves tested and the closure of some private laboratories.New cases exceeded 1,000 a day from December 30 to January 2, and have again increased since January 6, a day after tests went up by nearly 150 percent to 23,606 as of 12 noon of January 5.
The World Health Organization earlier identified four variants of Sars-CoV-2 that are being transmitted globally. "The initial 300 plus samples that were tested by the PGC were just initial. This is a continuing surveillance system that we had established already," said Vergeire.
