“Fast and the Furious” movies. No wonder those behind the successful franchise decided to give them their own movie.Joining the bickering duo for this outing are Vanessa Kirby, who plays the burned British Intelligence operative who has in her possession a deadly virus playfully and misleadingly code-named Snowflake; and Idris Elba, as the deadly superspy from an equally deadly shadow organization intent on acquiring said virus.
Aside from the action, perhaps most people came to see the two leads hurl verbal nukes at each other non-stop. For that, you will get your money’s worth. The assaults fly out of the actor’s mouths with ease, the mutual disdain on their faces intense. Thanks to the commanding presence of both leading men, the jabs and insults almost never fall flat and almost always hit their target: your funny bone.
Some attempt was given to rounding out the otherwise flat, stock characters of Johnson and Statham, and even Idris Elba’s superspy Brixton Lore personality, to perhaps make the movie more interesting, to somehow appear less shallow. Eventually it becomes an interesting but unnecessary enterprise because really, let’s face it, it’s all ornamental.
