TOKYO, Japan -- Filipino flyweight Danny Kingad put up a valiant effort, but in the end it wasn't enough as he fell short in his bid for the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship, losing to American MMA icon Demetrious Johnson by unanimous decision in the co-main event of ONE: Century, Sunday morning at the Ryogoku Kokugikan here.
Kingad was aggressive to begin the match, throwing a combination early. The former long-time UFC champion immediately went into wrestling mode and tried to bring the fight to the ground. Kingad was able to push Johnson to the cage, but ended up getting taken down anyway. On the ground, Johnson was relentless in putting the pressure on the Filipino, as he continuously moved around to look for submissions. More of the same from Johnson in the second and third rounds to secure the win and capture the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship.
Johnson now becomes the number one contender to the ONE Flyweight World Championship, currently held by Brazilian star Adriano Moraes.
