AS PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reiterated the country’s commitment to peaceful resolution of disputes, he said the Association of Southeast Asian Nations should never allow the international order to be subjected to the forces of might or hegemonic ambition especially with regard to the issues in the South China Sea.
He called for self-restraint on activities that complicate disputes in the region and undermine regional peace, stability, and security as he reiterated that actions, not words, should be the ultimate measure of their commitment to securing peace and stability. The Philippines recently got involved in a word war against China following an incident where a China Coast Guard bombarded with water a Philippine ship conducting resupply mission for troops stationed at the BRP Sierra Madre which was deliberately grounded in Ayungin Shoal.
The Department of Foreign Affairs rejected China’s latest map and said that it is yet another attempt to legitimize its purported sovereignty and jurisdiction over the country’s features and maritime zones which has no basis under international law particularly the United National Convention on the Law of the Sea .
Marcos warned that as tensions and mistrust between the “great powers” escalate, the prospect of miscalculation that could threaten to engulf the region could also increase with severe consequences for all. “At the upcoming COP28, Asean must call on developed countries to heighten the implementation of their commitments. Their commitments that include climate finance, technology development and transfer, and capacity building in order to drive Asean’s capabilities to prevent, mitigate, manage and adapt to the impacts of climate change,” said Marcos.
