PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed into law a measure amending the fixed term of some officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Signed on May 17, 2023, Republic Act 11939, or 'An Act Further Strengthening Professionalism and Promoting the Continuity of Policies and Modernization Initiatives in the Armed Forces of the Philippines,' overrides Republic Act 11709 signed by former leader Rodrigo Duterte just a year ago.

One of the main provisions of the new law tweaks the fixed tour of duty in the following key military positions from the previously approved three years to two which immediately commences upon the signing of the appointment unless terminated earlier by the Commander-in-Chief: Commanding General, Philippine Army; Commanding General, Philippine Air Force; Flag Officer in Command, Philippine Navy; and Superintendent, Philippine Military AcademyAs stated in RA 11939, those holding the said posts...
