In an interview with Rappler, Gregory Poling, one of the world's leading experts on the West Philippine Sea , said standoffs between China and Malaysia and Vietnam occurred near oil rigs located in the two Southeast Asian countries' exclusive economic zones. It also attempted to stop oil operations as images showed the Chinese coast guard vessel in"close proximity" to oil rigs.
