Malacañang on Friday said the retraction of self-confessed drug lord Kerwin Espinosa will not have any effect on the pending criminal cases against detained opposition Senator Leila de Lima.
Acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar echoed the statement of Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento, saying that Espinosa is“While Kerwin Espinosa appears to have recanted his allegations against Senator Leila de Lima, his recantation will not have any effect on the pending criminal cases against the lady senator,” Andanar said in a statement.
“We have to underscore what the Prosecutor General said -- Mr. Espinosa is not a state witness,” he added.his sworn statements during the Senate joint committee hearings on the killing of his father Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., saying he was “coerced, pressured, intimidated and seriously threatened” by the police to implicate de Lima.
In a series of Senate hearings in 2016, Espinosa testified that de Lima was part of the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison during her stint as Justice Secretary under the administration of late President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III. Espinosa said he was told to “cooperate” or else he and some family members will “suffer the same fate” like his father.
