A magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred early Friday morning in Davao de Oro, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs Director Teresito 'Toto' Bacolcol said the tremor took place around 2:58 a.m., some 35 kilometers southeast of New Bataan, also in the province.Tectonic in origin, the quake had a depth of focus of 13kms, Bacolcol said.Phivolcs said Intensity 5 was felt by residents in Caraga, Davao Oriental; New Bataan, Maragusan and Pantukan, Davao de Oro while Intensity 4 in Nabunturan, Compostela, Monkayo, Mawab, Montevista, Laak, Mabini and Maco, Davao de Oro.

Bacolcol said Instrumental Intensity 4 was recorded in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro while Intensity 3 in Malungon, Sarangani.
