Eighty four volcanic quakes were recorded in Bulusan over the past 24-hour period, indicating that the volcano is still showing signs of “low level unrest,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said on Thursday, June 30.In its latest bulletin issued on Thursday morning, Phivolcs disclosed that apart from 84 volcanic quakes in the past 24 hours, it also detected a 50-meter high “moderate emission” of plume that drifted north-northwest.

Bulusan’s sulfur dioxide emission averaged 630 tons per day on June 28 and the volcano’s edifice is still inflated. Phivolcs, on Wednesday, June 29 at 5 p.m., warned of a “renewed eruptive activity” from the Bulusan summit and potentially from the vents of its southern sides as an increase in activity was seen in the volcano.

With these developments, Phivolcs reminded the public that an Alert Level 1 status is still hoisted over Bulusan. “Local government units and the public are reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone must strictly be prohibited and that vigilance in the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone on the southeast sector must be exercised due to the increased possibilities of sudden and hazardous eruptions,” said Phivolcs.
