Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the acquisition of two frigates for the Philippine Navy will further boost the country’s ability to defend its territory.Lorenzana made the remark after one of the multi-mission capable frigates took to the water for the first time following the its launch at the shipyard of Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea last March 23.

Navy Chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad along with Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Benjamin Madrigal, Jr., and DND Undersecretary for Finance and Material Raymundo Elefante, led the Philippine delegation during the launch of the frigate. Capt. Jonathan Zata, director of the Naval Public Affairs Service, said the construction of the two 2,600-ton ships was made possible by the Frigate Acquisition Project for the Philippine Navy with a budget of P16 billion sourced from the Armed Forces of the Philippines Act Trust Fund.

“These ships will be fully equipped with Surface to Air and Surface to Surface Missiles, torpedoes, launchers and weapon systems for four dimensional warfare,” Zata said.
