Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr rebuffed China and asserted the Philippines’ rights over the West Philippine Sea even after a controversial ban on naval drills imposed by President Duterte.

Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr rebuffed China on Thursday, August 6, and asserted the Philippines’ rights over the West Philippine Sea even after a controversial ban on naval drills imposed by President Rodrigo Duterte.the Philippines from joining maritime drills in the South China Sea, parts of which belong to the Philippines as the West Philippine Sea.

“Wang, you're reading too much into a simple directive not to join these naval exercises in the CSC at this time,” Locsin tweeted Thursday morning, referring to the South China Sea by its acronym. Locsin went on to emphasize the Philippines’ legal victory against China over these waters – uttering a line more associated with former president Benigno Aquino III than with Duterte.

“What is ours is ours” in the context of the West Philippine Sea made headlines on July 25, 2011, when Aquino in his State of the Nation Address rebuked China for claiming the Philippines’ Recto Bank, internationally known as Reed Bank.. “Now, our message to the world is clear: What is ours is ours.”
