ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro on Sunday urged the House leadership to call for hearings to investigate the encroachment of different resorts and other activities in the Masungi Georeserve.
“While it is good that a hearing on the issue of the Captain’s Peak Resort was constructed in the area of Chocolate Hills, we are asking the House leadership to also call for a hearing on House Resolutions 867 and 1598 even during the break to look into the growing encroachment at the Masungi Reserve,” she said.
On March 19, the Masungi Georeserve Foundation Inc. called the attention of Erin’s Place and Lihim na Batis, a resort located in the portion covered by the Upper Marikina River Basin and under the municipality of Baras, Rizal. It cited seven more resorts and private developments within the 26,000-hectare UMRB overlapping with the Masungi reforestation area managed by the foundation and is a protected area in itself since 2011.
Of the seven sites that were spotted and documented using a drone, the foundation identified Joeylot, Damun Bakery, Eastside Resort and Campsite, GSB Farm, and Bangui Farm.“Masungi is very important for the watershed of Rizal and Metro Manila. “The Protected Areas Management Board must not just allow these things to happen,” she added.
