Defining the News

HUALIEN, Taiwan – Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te thanked troops on Tuesday after China held military exercises around the self-ruled island, as he urged them to help make it “safer”.

Lai vowed in his inaugural speech to defend Taiwan’s democracy and freedom, which Beijing said amounted to a “confession of independence”. Lai also visited an army base where he watched artillerymen demonstrate loading and discharging a howitzer. The Hualien air force base saw dozens of fighter jets take off on Friday, the second day of China’s military drills.
