Senator Panfilo M. Lacson, chairman of the Senate national defense committee, lauded on Wednesday President Duterte’s directive banning foreign vessels from passing through Philippine territorial waters without prior clearance.

“Way to go! The president deserves everybody’s support in regard to this guidance,’’ Lacson said.

‘’The message is unequivocal and clear for all the concerned agencies of government to do what is necessary to deal with any situation relative to the issue,’’ he added. A press statement of Malacanang last Tuesday stated that “To avoid misunderstanding in the future, the President is putting on notice that beginning today , all foreign vessels passing our territorial waters must notify and get clearance from the proper government authority well in advance of the actual passage.’’

Department of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the continued passage by Chinese naval vessels through the country’s southwestern waters without permission or prior notice is becoming an irritant.
