La Trinidad, Benguet recorded the country’s coldest day so far this northeast monsoon season or “amihan” with the mercury dipping to 7.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning, Feb. 21.
The cold temperature, which was recorded at the Benguet State University agrometeorology station in La Trinidad, is so far the lowest air temperature in the country since the northeast monsoon season began in November 2020. Other monitoring stations of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration also recorded significantly low temperatures on Sunday morning.
The temperature in Baguio City dropped to 9.0 degrees Celsius at 5 a.m., while PAGASA’s Science Garden in Quezon City recorded a minimum air temperature of 19.3 degrees Celsius at 6 a.m.Moreover, Malaybalay, Bukidnon and Tanay, Rizal registered relatively low temperatures on Sunday. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Baguio City was 6.3 degrees Celsius on Jan. 18, 1961, while the coldest day in Metro Manila was registered twice on Feb. 4, 1987 and Dec. 30, 1988 at 15.1 degrees Celsius.
