MANILA, Philippines: Filipino taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa could not make the Olympics for the second straight time, falling to Samirkhon Ababakirov of Kazakhstan in the Asian Qualification Tournament men's -58kg semifinals, 4-7, 5-16, at the Taishan International Exhibition Center in Taian, China on Saturday, March 16.

The finalists in each weight category were the only ones rewarded with Olympic passages.Barbosa made it a rather close fight in the first round but Ababakirov's height and skill advantage was just too much for the Filipino to scale in the second. In the women's -57kg class, another Philippine bet in Baby Jessica Canabal likewise fell short of a win in making the Olympics as she succumbed to Laetitia Aoun of Lebanon, 0-11, 5-6, in the semifinals.

Pacquiao denied bid to compete in Paris OlympicsThe International Olympic Committee (IOC) denied the bid of eight-division boxing world champion Emmanuel 'Manny' Pacquiao to compete in the Paris Olympics. In response to the Philippine Olympic Committee's (POC) appeal to allow Pacquiao to fight in the Games in July, the IOC stressed that he is five years above the 40-year-old age limit. James McLeod, IOC director for National Olympic Committee Relations, wrote the response to the POC request. One way that Pacquiao could qualify for the Olympics is under the Universality rule, but that option has also been ruled out. The Universality rule exception cannot apply to national Olympic committees (NOCs) with an average of more than eight athletes in individual sports/disciplines at the last two editions of the Games.
