Economic well-being over petty politics. Vice President Sara Duterte recently exhorted the nation to cease politicking in the face of the escalating geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

She encouraged us to brace for tougher times ahead as hostilities between Israel and Hamas or the Islamic Resistance Movement, as well as Ukraine and Russia, continue to escalate. Filipinos must be prepared and focused on coping with the inflationary pressures of the international conflicts on the economy.

Frankly, our executive and legislative leaders should be mindful of these concerns. Most Filipinos could not care less about the politicking and grandstanding of some individuals, who at this juncture have no qualms about exposing their naked ambitions. The people expect the government to find solutions to pressing national problems. They want to hear how our leaders will protect them from the socio-economic fallout brought about by the international conflicts.

Further, Common Article 3 to the Conventions requires the humane treatment of all persons in enemy hands and prohibits murder, mutilation, torture, cruel treatment, hostage-taking and unfair trial. For instance, inhumane treatment includes all forms of gender-related violence, such as the sexual abuse of women. The 1899 Hague Regulations cover the rights and duties of belligerent states in their military operations, as well as the prohibitions on the methods and means of warfare.
