THE commemoration of Filipino Independence Day on Wednesday unavoidably brought back to mind awkward and embarrassing facts and particulars of our people's historic declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite, on June 12, 1898.You would think that after a century of remembering, the nation would by now have scrubbed the errors and missteps in the historical record.
It reads:'The undersigned chiefs of towns comprising the provinces hereinafter named, elected as such in the manner prescribed by the decree of the 18th and instructions dated the 20th of June last, after having been confirmed in their respective offices by the president of the government and having taken the prescribed oath before him, have met in full assembly previously called for the purpose of discussing the solemn proclamation of Filipino independence.
