Officials and residents of a village in Igbaras town, Iloilo province are calling on the provincial government to intervene and put a stop to treasure-hunting activities at a private property for fear that it would cause erosion and landslide in the community.

Igbaras municipal mayor Jaime Esmeralda and Barangay Pasong Chairman Cornelio Elumba have sought the help of Iloilo Governor Arthur Defesor Jr. to follow up with the National Museum of the Philippines , which issued a permit to a certain Noly Bayogos and his team to conduct treasure-hunting in their community.

As early as September last year, Esmeralda had already written to NMP Director-General Jeremy Barns to verify and inquire about the status of Bayogos’ team after NMP’s Cultural Properties Regulation Division issued a treasure-hunting permit. Local officials also complained that Bayogos’ did not have a permit or endorsement from the local government or the barangay.

It was unclear what kind of treasure Bayogos’ team is looking for in the area, but local officials dismissed rumors that it may be the famed Yamashita treasure.
