“ready” to accommodate President Duterte’s request for Congress to convene in a special session to ensure that the necessary funds would be available for the possible evacuation of millions of Filipinos in the Middle East, following the growing tension between the United States and Iran.House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez expressed the Lower Chamber’s readiness to quickly respond to the Chief Executive’s call to ensure that contingency plans are in place.
Romualdez said that, while they were still waiting for the final word from Malacañang on the proposed special session, Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has already directed the House Secretariat to “make the necessary preparations. Romualdez noted that under Section 87, Rule XI of the House Rules, “the Speaker, in consultation with the Majority and Minority Leaders and their Senate counterparts, may convene the House in session at any time during a recess or between sessions to consider urgent legislative matters or concerns.”
He assured the families of overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East that the Lower Chamber would exhaust all means that their loved ones will be out of harm’s way.
