Taong 1903 pa naitatag ang Meralco, na noon ay mas kilala bilang “Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company.” Samantala, noong 1961, binili ang Meralco ng isang grupo ng mga negosyante, na siyang pinangunahan ni Eugenio Lopez Sr., mula sa mga Amerikanong nagmamay-ari rito.
Sa panahon bago naganap ang naturang konstruksyon, idinadaing ng mga opisyal ng Maynila ang mabagal na paglago ng ekonomiya na dulot umano ng “makalumang sistema ng pagsakay sa kabayo” at “kawalan ng maayos na sistema ng transportasyon.” Tumugon ang Meralco, hindi lamang sa aspekto ng pamamahala sa sistema ng kuryente, kundi pati na rin sa pamamahala ngTaong 1948, nang dahil sa Ikalawang Pandaigdigang Digmaan, itinigil ng Meralco ang pamamahala nito sa pampublikong transportasyon, at nagtuon sa sistema ng kuryente sa bansa. Pagsapit ng 1961, ipinagbili ang naturang institusyon sa grupo ng mga negosyanteng pinangungunahan ni Eugenio Lopez Sr.
