It's always cool to see a fresh take on the good old zombie apocalypse genre, and while "All Of Us Are Dead" isn't exactly new, it's certainly interesting. Adapted from the popular webtoon "Now At Our School," which ran from 2009 to 2011, the story is uniquely set in a Korean high school. In the tradition of Korea’s expertise in making zombie and horror films and dramas including “Train to Busan,” “Kingdom” and “Peninsula,” “All of Us Are Dead” offers a fresh take on the genre. That means, of course, that our main characters are — you guessed it — teenagers. As a mysterious virus spreads quickly in the school, our young survivors must find a way out, and fast. 28 (Netflix) The cast “All of Us Are Dead” during the press conference in Seoul on Jan. Exciting, huh? Well, it was certainly stressful.
So is it worth keeping your blood pressure up for a 12-episode binge? Definitely, and here are the reasons why. 26 (Netflix) “All of Us Are Dead” will be released on Netflix on Jan. (No spoilers!) 1. The utter drama Young love and teenage angst are interesting enough by themselves, but put zombies (and blood and gore) into the mix, and you have a riveting story. The series stars Park Ji-hu, Yoon Chan-young, Cho Yi-hyun, Lomon, Yoo In-soo, Lim Jae-hyeok and Lee Yoo-mi of the hit Netflix series “Squid Game. Aside from touching friendships and cute crushes, the story was made more fun by the unlikely pairings and teams formed throughout the show as students are forced to rely on each other to survive. The effortlessly cool heartthrob and the aloof class president? Nice. 26, the cast and directors talked about the series, which was based on the Korean webtoon “Now at Our School.
The thorny rebel and the cool archer? Perfection. 2. “We have zombies in a school uniform or in a gym suit. The important themes "All Of Us Are Dead" is not just about love and zombies. The series touches on serious topics such as bullying, violence, sexual harassment, and even suicide. Lee Yoo-mi plays the role of student Lee Na-yeon and said, “I got curious about Na-yeon while reading the webtoon, and it’s an honor for me to come to play the character. There are also stark insights about the world of the internet and social media, as well as the pressures of society and how they affect the youth.
It also provides a sobering take on how vastly different the world is for teens and adults — and how at the end of the day, kids are still kids, and everyone is just trying their best.” Director Lee Jae-kyoo, who helmed the dramas “Fashion 70’s” and “Beethoven Virus,” said he felt pressure in making the webtoon into a series. 3. The vast ensemble No typical mean girls and nerdy underdogs here. However, I consulted with author Joo Dong-geun numerous times to create the series and I am excited to showcase ‘All of Us Are Dead’ to the viewers,” he said, according to the Korea Herald. The nice thing about "All Of Us Are Dead" is it puts the spotlight on different kinds of people. Just in the main cast alone, we have the not-so-smart girl with the heart of gold; the boy-next-door who steps up to be the hero; the less privileged kid who wins everyone's hearts. Our series centers on a zombie virus spreading among young students.
And the story isn't just limited to that. Outside the school, we have a policeman who wants to save everyone; a politician who understands her duty; a father who has to choose between helping the public or searching for his child.” About the stars of the series, he said, “I had previously never spent whole days on rehearsals, but for this one, we did spend whole days just rehearsing. The best part? No one is more important than the other, which just makes for a head-scratching scenario every single time. 4. The tryouts with hundreds of zombie actors was a challenge, but their efforts made everything possible. The gripping plot You know that feeling you get when the bad guy on screen starts to make sense? "All Of Us Are Dead" shows us not just how the virus spread, kicking off the zombie apocalypse, but also exactly why the virus exists.
So you couldn't help but hang on to every word about the virus' origins, its developments, and its possible antidote. Flashbacks of the experiments help the storytelling of the series along, and somehow it just gets worse and worse every episode. Because it's not just enough to start a zombie apocalypse, oh no — there have to be virus mutations, too! Sound familiar? 5. The cute boys and strong girls This list would be wholly incomplete without a nod to the characters and the actors playing them. From the get go, actor Park Solomon charms us with his portrayal of the cool and handsome Lee Soo Hyuk.
His character even catches the attention of the main female lead, Nam Onjo, played by Park Ji Hoo, who has that subtly pretty and approachable vibe that makes you want to keep watching her. The hero of the story, of course, is Lee Cheong San, played by Yoon Chan Young. There's no getting around it, you'll love this guy with every episode that passes — he's definitely the kind of person you'd want with you in the case of a zombie apocalypse. And of course there's Choi Namra (Cho Yi Hyun), who transforms from distant and dull to badass and awesome. Lastly, how could we forget about actress Lee Yoo Mi? You might have cried for her in "Squid Game," but the internet unanimously agrees that her character in "All Of Us Are Dead" deserves one big slap for her actions.
Great acting all around! "All Of Us Are Dead" is certainly not perfect — it was an adventure that was a little too long that you might feel winded after watching it — but overall it was a fun binge. The series is currently streaming on Netflix. – RC, GMA News .
