THE southwest monsoon, locally known as 'habagat,' has intensified and will bring rain in most areas of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical and Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Tuesday.

'Many areas, including Metro Manila, have started to experience rain showers even early in the morning due to habagat although they would be more frequent in the afternoon or at night,' Weather Specialist Grace Castaneda said.

Visayas, Mindanao, Mimaropa , Bataan, Zambales, Cavite and Batangas are also affected by the southwest monsoon, which will bring overcast skies with scattered downpours and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, the state-run weather agency said. The rest of Luzon, meanwhile, will likely have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms due to the same weather system and localized thunderstorms, it added.
