Pangilinan made the suggestion after Vietnam stopped its rice exports to the Philippines because of the COVID-19 threat.
As a former presidential adviser on food security and agricultural modernization during the Aquino administration, Pangilinan said the Duterte administration should stop rice smuggling, hoarding and criminal activities during times of crisis.Pangilinan also urged the Department of Agriculture to improve the rice farming sector by giving the requirements it needs such as fertilizers, machineries, financial, among others).
‘’Mabilis na bumaha ng imported rice, mabilis na bumagsak ang lokal na presyo ng palay, mabilis na nawalan ng kita ang magpapalay pero mabagal na napaabot ang tulong na matagal na nilang kailangan,’’ he pointed out. Pangilinan, president of the Liberal Party , said government should buy rice farmers’ produce at a high price, putting money into their pockets that they need for their next planting season.
Because of the low prices of rice, among others, many Filipino farmers have shifted to planting other products.
