Former Tourism Secretary and former Senator Richard J. Gordon vehemently opposed the plan of the National Museum of the Philippines to move the statue of Lapu Lapu or the “Sentinel of Freedom” from Agrifina Circle at the National Park in Luneta.

“Why would they move the Lapu Lapu statue and where would they relocate it? Why did they do this without consulting the stakeholders?” asked Gordon. In a letter to Gordon that was delivered on July 4, NMP Director-General Jeremy R. Barns wrote: “….The monument, after technical assessment as well as consultation with its sculptor, has been found to require structural repair relative to its internal frame and foundation which, due primarily to exposure to the elements, has apparently weakened to a degree that prompts concerns on our part regarding its continued preservation and integrity as well as of public safety should no action be taken.
