PHOTOS and videos circulated online on Friday, July 25, as netizens and commuters noticed the renaming of street signs along the crossroads to Ayala CBD. The sign in question? Gil Puyat Ave. Commuters and drivers were puzzled while netizens speculated that it was digitally altered.
On close inspection, it was indeed changed to Gil “Tulog” Ave—an apparent play on words from “sleepless” to “asleep,” to push a marketing campaign for a sleep-therapy product.
In a statement to Rappler, he slammed the marketing ploy of the advertising agency behind the change. “What has happened to our sense of respect for each other? There is a line we should not cross, so we can maintain our own self-respect, and for everyone else. Our name is not to be violated by reasons that are financial, political, or otherwise.”· The names on our streets are not just ordinary people. These are the names of people that served our nation well.
· Most, again, most of the street names today are names of people that have made an impact in their respective timelines. Cmon people, ? ? Quoting the letter, the netizen asked, “What has happened to our sense of respect to each other?”· Whoever authorized those disrespectful signs of a great Filipino Senator is crazy. They should be sanctioned, not merely reprimanded.
