– A team from the Nasipit DENR-Community Environment and Natural Resources Office on Tuesday found a nesting ground of the endangered green sea turtle at the coastal village of Sacol in Buenavista town, Agusan del Norte.
CENR Officer Alijandra Buiser ordered the team to protect the 80 eggs left by the giant reptile on the beach. A group of fishermen who went to fish at dawn stumbled upon a hole on the beach and discovered it contained turtle eggs. Chelonia mydas, which is also known as Pacific green turtle, is classified as endangered since they are threatened by overharvesting of their eggs, hunting of adults, being caught in fishing gear and loss of nesting beach sites. Predators like Tiger sharks, are known for eating sea turtles. Dogs, seabirds, raccoons, ghost crabs and other predators prey on eggs and hatchlings.
