Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Tuesday urged the Department of Energy (DOE) to thoroughly study the possible impact to consumers if the plan to increase biofuel content in diesel pushes through.

Gatchalian noted that the proposal to hike biofuel content in diesel is meant to help absorb the oversupply in the country’s copra industry, but he said the plan warrants careful study.

The senator said that he is getting mixed signals from both the DOE and the Department of Agriculture in terms of addressing the concerns of coconut farmers and the biofuels industry. DOE officials, however, said the Department of Agriculture’s projected that coconut harvest for this year to satisfy the proposed 5% biodiesel blend was 1.5 billion nuts.

“Ang sinasabi ng DA, there’s supply at ang sabi nila ay ayaw lang ng DOE dahil tataas iyong presyo . But the DOE is saying there’s no supply,” the lawmaker pointed out.

Let me get this clear: The impact of higher cocobiodiesel blending has been thoroughly studied by the private sector & academe & shared with DOE well before the 2006 Biofuels Law. Blend should have long since gone up to 5% from the initial 2% if not for DOE’s indecision!! 🤨
