I first met Budjette Tan — one-half of the pair of genius co-creators of the phenomenally successful Filipino graphic novel, Trese, in 1994. I was writing a section called 'On the Verge' for Mirror Weekly, and we communicated via snail mail. He told me about a comic book art exhibit in Robinson's Galleria in one of his letters, and from then on, my eyes opened up to the fantastic scene of local creators, writers and artists of which Budjette is passionately part.
I was looking at his drawing and thought, this is so cool! But something clicked in the back of my head — why does it feel like we've seen this guy before? This guy with a leather jacket carrying an ancient magical weapon— we've seen him so many times.'What if we make Trese a woman?' Kajo replied that would actually make the character more badass. That same day we had this idea, he emails me a sketch of what would eventually become Alexandra Trese.
