By Reuters Jonathan Niu got to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport five hours early on Friday, not least because he had a lot of luggage to check for his flight to his native China:

Even so, Niu’s father seemed relaxed ahead of his flight on China Eastern Airlines from Terminal 1. He smiled broadly, urging a reporter to immediately book a flight to China as well. After arriving, Niu said he planned to make sure his parents’ home in Hefei, capital of the eastern province of Anhui, was well stocked with groceries and other supplies. He would then settle in and stay with them for a month or two in a sort of self-imposed quarantine before returning to New York.

Niu figured he would cheer up his parents’ neighbors by sharing some of his supply of face masks and drop off some at a nearby hospital. He had also packed five or so masks in his carry-on luggage, thinking he would hand them to his seatmates on the plane.Almost everyone waiting on line to check in to flights to Shanghai and Beijing at Terminal 1 on Friday were Chinese citizens returning home after a US vacation or work trip.

Two Americans in the line declined to answer questions about their trip. Four other Americans said they were connecting in Shanghai to other flights to Thailand or the Philippines and had no plans to leave the airport in China.

Chinese-Filipinos lament racism, call for unity as new coronavirus spreadsHuwag naman yung mga chinoy. Dito na sa pinas nagkaisip ang mga yan. Paano kung sa atin nagmula yung virus, paano na yung mga half pinoy sa ibang bansa? Hindi natin gugustuhin na malait sila, daba? Alalay lang sa pedal. Not all chinese nationals got the virus. You are all ignorants about NCoV. The virus attacks only to weak immune system. Instead of discriminating them, prevent and fight the virus. Plus, prayers. I hope people will also understand that Chinese people didn't want, prayed and hoped for this. They are also suffering, stress about their families and hurt. We fear for our life and health but please, be human. Blaming game will never work.

A new virus stirs up ancient hatred[OPINION] The disease isn't the only thing that's spreading — or the only thing causing harm. Across the internet, we've seen widespread eruptions of racist scapegoating, blaming Chinese for a disease that has so far only killed Chinese. This is not the time for moral high ground and virtue signaling. There’s a potential for massive death. If I choose to avoid Chinese ppl and you don’t then piss off! Listen. The fact is the experts are saying this disease may have started from Chinese eating bats and other wild species. This is a fact!! Facts are not fucking racist. Stop making this about racism because it is not. Keeping yourself safe from a deadly virus is a crime against humanity now? This is inappropriate but since you’re bringing up racism need I remind you who has always treated the Filipinos like second class citizens? Good grief.
