DFA advised Filipinos to avoid the Hong Kong International Airport 'as a destination or transit airport'

MANILA- The Department of Foreign Affairs advised Filipinos Friday to avoid the Hong Kong International Airport amid protests in the Chinese administrative region.

Filipinos are advised to contact their airlines at least 5 hours before their scheduled flight to ensure that the trip will push through. "Filipino travelers who have no urgent business in Hong Kong [are advised] to avoid HKIA as a destination or transit airport for the meantime," the DFA said in a public advisory issued Friday.- Philippine Airlines: 2769.7123The DFA also assured Filipinos that the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong is monitoring the developments on the ongoing protest there.

Ten weeks of confrontations between police and protesters have plunged Hong Kong into its worst crisis since it reverted from British to Chinese rule in 1997 and presented the biggest popular challenge to Xi Jinping in his 7 years in power.- With a report from Reuters
