BEIJING—Coach Yeng Guiao has an answer for why Gilas Pilipinas has struggled to translate its good performances in practice to actual games, a question posed by Troy Rosario following their most recent defeat in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
There is no question that Gilas Pilipinas have mastered its plays and its defensive schemes. The practices — both in Foshan and Beijing — have run smoothly, with the Filipinos working through sets as though they were still back at Meralco Gym in Pasig. "Pero pagka 'yung pina-practice mo na 'yun, tinranslate mo na doon sa totoong laro, mag-iiba totally," he pointed out. "Kasi ang haba or ang lakas ng katapat mo."
Yet the team only managed to be complete with just a little more than a week before leaving for the World Cup, because three of its players — June Mar Fajardo, Roger Pogoy, and Rosario — were still playing in the finals of the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup.
