Ex-top diplomat urges PRRD to attend US-ASEAN summit

Del Rosario made this call in relation to President Duterte’s threat to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement following the US decision to cancel the visa of Sen. Ronald Dela Rosa, a known close ally of the Chief Executive.

“Should our President wish to improve the MDT and the VFA, he may wish to accept the invitation to meet President Trump. This would present an excellent opportunity for our President to place on the table his full expectations pertaining to our bilateral relations,” Del Rosario said in a statement sent to reporters.

Del Rosario was the DFA secretary when the Philippines filed an arbitration case against China before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. In July, 2016, the United Nations-backed PCA ruled in favor of the Philippine petition invalidating China’s nine-dash line claim over the vast swath of waters in the South China Sea.

The reason why the US came to the rescue was because the PNoy administration was ill-prepared for the relief operation. Also, the reason why PH could not edtablish formal military alliances with other major powers is because of our sole reliance on US-VFA.
