Ex-IATF adviser laments 'exploitation' of Filipinos' lack of education on ivermectin use

"exploit" allegedly Filipinos' lack of education on ivermectin use, in the absence of studies that prove its safety and efficacy against COVID-19.on Friday, Dr. Tony Leachon, a health reform advocate and former adviser to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases , shared his sentiments on the distribution of the antiparasitic drug to some residents this week in Quezon City.

"Hindi ma-monitor yung adverse events ng mga pasyenteng pagbibigyan ng ivermectin sa Matandang Balara sa Quezon City. 'Yan ay isa sa context na dapat nating isipin dahil ang approval ng Food and Drug Administration ay based on compassionate use in five private hospitals, and of course compounded by licensed pharmacists with prescriptions,"[Translation: You won't be able to monitor any adverse events on patients who received ivermectin in Old Balara in Quezon City.

Leachon said that while the conditions on the distribution were met based on the exemptions set by the Food and Drug Administration, there are still not enough studies to guarantee the safety of the drug.

Defensor said the government should give the drug a chance, even as clinical trials are yet to be conducted in the country.
