MANILA - Experts on Wednesday said the country should step up its education system to build a more competitive workforce in the future. During a joint Senate committee hearing, Dr.

Ethel Agnes Pascua-Valenzuela, director of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization , said employers are now looking for modern skills.

In particular, proficiency in information technology is mainly due to the automation of the global workforce, which will result to the displacement of 10.2 percent of workers in Southeast Asian nations in 2028, she said.The Philippines ranked 64th in the “Global Competitiveness Index” in 2019, with Singapore placing first.

Employers will be looking for more programmers, data scientists, and software developers in the future, she said.
