The number of election-related violence cases for the 2019 midterm elections has gone down by 55 percent compared to the 2016 presidential elections, police data disclosed Thursday.

PNP spokesman Col. Bernard Banac said that from 133 election-related violent incidents in 2016, only 60 incidents were reported from election period for 2019 polls, or from January 13 to June 6.For the 2019 national polls, 51 election-related violence were recorded from January 13 to May 12 while eight cases were reported during the election day. Only one was reported so far for post-election.

Of the 113 victims reported for this year’s polls, Banac said 23 of them were reported killed, 46 were injured while 44 were unharmed. The PNP leadership earlier attributed the reduction of election violence to early preparations that started as early as July last year—at a time when the number of elected officials killed were rising.
