The Quezon City-based group urged the concerned government agencies to swiftly end the unabated sale of these items that posed serious health risks to users and even non-users.
According to the group’s latest test buys, out of the 15 skin whitening creams bought , 14 were found to contain mercury in the range of 970 to 23,700 parts per million , way above the 1 ppm limit under the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive and the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
A portable X-Ray Fluorescence analytical device was used to screen the products for mercury and lead. According to the World Health Organization : “The main adverse effect of the inorganic mercury contained in skin lightening soaps and creams is kidney damage. Mercury in skin lightening products may also cause skin rashes, skin discoloration and scarring, as well as a reduction in the skin’s resistance to bacterial and fungal infections.”
