President Rodrigo Duterte admitted Monday that he is deeply worried and nervous about the growing tension between the United States and Iran, saying that millions of Filipinos will be affected if a war breaks out in the Middle East.Duterte made the statement following the death of Iran’s top general Qassem Soleimani in a U.S. targeted airstrike in Baghdad, Iraq Friday.
“We have so many millions, nearing three I think, of Filipinos working mainly in the Middle East. Kinakabahan ako .” “Should Iran strike any U.S. person or target, the United States will quickly and fully strike back, and perhaps in a disproportionate manner,” Trump said in a tweet. “Those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!”Duterte said he told security officials in Malacañang on Sunday to prepare in case the country needs to evacuate Filipinos from the Middle East.
The President suggested that Filipinos in dangerous places like Iran, Israel, and Saudi Arabia be evacuated first, noting that most overseas Filipino workers are stationed in those countries.The President likewise urged Congress to hold a special session to allocate funds for the possible evacuation of Filipinos in case of war.
