The President, however, refused to let the United States turn the Philippines into a missile launch site amid its growing hostility with Iran.
The President also raised the possibility of the deployment of Filipino troops to help the United States if the Philippines’ interest is at stake. Any decision on the matter, however, rests not only with the President but also Congress, Duterte said. Tension between the United States and Iran has escalated recently following the U.S. drone strike that killed a top Iranian military general in Iraq. The two countries have exchanged threats on potential retaliatory attacks.
Duterte has also ordered concerned agencies to map out contingency plans for the evacuation of Filipinos from the Middle East in case of a full-blown war between the United States and Iran. “Kung may masaktan , then we’ll just have to move physically, not only verbal. What it would consist of, I cannot, as of now, tell you,” he said.“I hope that they would do everything to assure the safety — that no Filipino gets hurt. Because kung sabi mo may masaktan o may mga casualty , then I would not like it. Then I have to rethink my position,” he said.
