President Duterte was all praises for the Asia-Europe Meeting partners for their renewed commitment to open and inclusive multilateralism and the rule of law, noting its importance during a period of volatility.
In his message, the President noted that the ASEM’s commitment is essential during the time of crisis, in particular the coronavirus pandemic. According to the President, disputes must be settled peacefully in accordance with international law, stressing that the South China Sea must remain a sea of peace, stability, and prosperity, where the vital interests of stakeholders inside and outside the region are recognized and respected.“There can be no other acceptable basis for a just maritime order but the law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” he added.
