The inquiry by the House committee on human rights on the bloody war on drugs waged by the Rodrigo Duterte administration from 2016 to 2022 is a step in the right direction.Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman was entirely correct in saying it is “better late than never,” as the crackdown and the alleged extra-judicial killings would have been conveniently swept under the rug by authorities had Congress not taken the initiative.
During the first hearing, lawmakers sought to retrace the actions taken by the Department of Justice as the death toll rose and complaints piled up over irregularities in police anti-drug operations. He acknowledged “there have indeed been incidents of human rights violations not just during the drug war, but also incidents of … extrajudicial killings, torture, enforced disappearances and other serious violations of the right to life, liberty and security…the executive department has done its share in accordance with procedure in prosecuting and investigating these abuses.”
